Lisnagarvey High School sixth form students, have taken up the gauntlet, and shown they possess the necessary skills, ambition, and drive to succeed in a competitive business environment. The Business Studies Department (always up for a challenge) decided to enter two teams into the Young Enterprise company programme. Mr Thompson assisted the Year 13 students, and Mr Fulton assisted the Year 14 students.

On the 2nd Dec both groups set of for St George’s Market in Belfast, to sell their wares to members of the public and indeed other trade stalls. The event proved to be very successful, giving students first-hand experience of selling to the public. Subsequently, with fresh energy and ambition, the students then organised addition sales opportunities at Riverdale Primary School, local community Christmas craft and gift fare, and Lisnagarvey’ s school music concert.

Such an opportunity has allowed students to enhance their communication and interpersonal skills, in addition to putting into practice the theory they are learning within Business Studies. Both members of staff who have assisted with this project have been impressed with the team work and entrepreneur spirit within the group. Mr Fulton stated, “It is very rewarding to see the students take an initial idea, and develop it into something which they can market and sell. Young Enterprise provides a fantastic vehicle to draw out key employment skills within our young people. Many of these students have shown maturity beyond their years, in terms of their ability to produce, promote, and sell their products! ”
