Merit System

Our junior school merit system has been designed to motivate pupils and reward them for not only making excellent academic progress but also for their overall contribution to the life of the school. Its purpose is to help pupils see that if they approach school with enthusiasm, they will be rewarded, in line with our school’s ethos of celebrating success.

This system is not designed simply to reward pupils for adhering to the standards that are set for every student in the school.

Pupils can collect merit points for exceeding expectation in the following areas:

Excellent Classwork

Excellent Homework

Excellent Assessment Results

Contribution to Class

Being Helpful Charity

Extra-Curricular

Achievement

Weekly Attendance

At the start of each term, pupils in years 8-10 receive a merit booklet in which to collect their points. Points are not just to be collected in the classroom and can be awarded by any member of staff, not just teachers. At the end of each term, the merit scores are added up and the top five pupils in each class are rewarded.

Rewards vary but some examples include prizes, trips out and treat activities in school. The scheme is designed to ensure every child has a fair chance of being rewarded. At the beginning of a new term, every pupil will receive a new booklet and start from scratch, in order to allow everyone the same starting point when working towards a termly reward.
